Broker symbol guide

GER40, DE40, DAX40
what your broker's symbol means.

GER40, DE40, DAX40, GER30, DE30 and GERMANY40 are all the same market: the DAX 40, Germany's benchmark stock index. Brokers simply spell it differently and bolt on account suffixes such as .cash or m. Names ending in -F, .f or FT are futures-priced versions; the plain name is almost always the cash CFD.

Every spelling, grouped

Measured on broker pages, TradingView broker feeds and live MetaTrader servers. MetaTrader matches symbol names exactly, including case, so GER40 and GER40m are two different symbols on the platform even though they are the same market.

What the underlying market is

The DAX is Germany's headline stock index, priced in euros and calculated from shares listed in Frankfurt. It grew from 30 to 40 companies in September 2021, which is why so many brokers still carry a "30" in the name. RoboForex, for one, renamed .DE30Cash to .DE40Cash at the time; others never changed theirs.

Cash or futures?

Most DAX CFDs are cash CFDs: they track the cash index, which only prints while the exchange is open, and follow the future outside those hours. A futures-priced CFD such as Pepperstone's GER40-F or BlackBull's DE40.f quotes the futures price instead, so it sits at a different level from the cash CFD even at the same moment. Compare like with like.

The trap to watch for

The number lies. GER30, DE30, DAX30 and GERMAN30 are not a smaller index: at brokers they are the DAX 40 under its pre-2021 name. FundedNext lists GER30, FXCM shows GER30 on TradingView, and CMC Markets shows GERMAN30 with the description "Germany 40".

One exception: outside a broker feed, TVC:DE30 on TradingView is a German 30 year bond series and DJ:DE30 is a Dow Jones Germany Titans index. Only read DE30 as the DAX inside a broker's symbol list.

How the RB Trading Pro Journal handles it

The RB Trading Pro Journal reads every spelling above, from GER40 and DE40.cash to GER30p and PEPPERSTONE:GER40, as one market: the DAX 40. It prices it live at the cash DAX level, so your open GER40 trade shows the same index your broker's cash CFD tracks, whatever your broker calls it.

Trades arrive by hand, by file import, or live from MT4 and MT5 and cTrader, in whatever spelling your broker uses. You never rename a symbol to get a live price or a correct R.

Journal your GER40 trades under any name

Log trades by hand, import a file, or live-sync MetaTrader and cTrader. The Journal recognises your broker's spelling and prices open trades live.

How this page was built: spellings come from brokers' and prop firms' own help pages and notices, from the broker feeds on TradingView, and from a public dataset of 13,740 symbol names read from 241 live MetaTrader 4 and 5 servers (metatraderVPS/metatrader-broker-symbols, CC BY 4.0). A broker is named only where one of those sources shows it. Brokers rename symbols from time to time, so check your own platform's symbol list if a name here does not match.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is GER40 the same as DE40 and DAX40?

Yes. GER40, DE40, DAX40, GERMANY40 and GDAXI are all broker names for the DAX 40, the German benchmark stock index. The price of a cash CFD under any of these names tracks the same index; only the spelling and any account suffix differ.

Why do some brokers still call the DAX GER30 or DE30?

The DAX had 30 companies until September 2021, when it expanded to 40. Some brokers kept the old name: FXCM shows GER30 on TradingView, FundedNext lists GER30, FBS uses DE30 and CMC Markets shows GERMAN30 with the description Germany 40. They all track the DAX 40.

What does GER40.cash mean?

GER40.cash is the name FTMO uses for its cash DAX CFD. The .cash suffix marks a CFD priced from the cash index rather than from a dated futures contract. XM writes the same idea as GER40Cash and RoboForex as .DE40Cash.

What is the difference between GER40 and GER40-F?

At Pepperstone, GER40 is the cash CFD and GER40-F is a forward CFD priced from the front-month DAX future and rolled automatically. Futures carry a basis to the cash index, so the two quote different prices at the same moment.

Is DE30 on TradingView the DAX?

Only inside a broker feed, for example a broker that still names its DAX CFD DE30. Outside one, TVC:DE30 is a German 30 year bond series and DJ:DE30 is a Dow Jones Germany Titans index. The DAX itself is XETR:DAX, and TVC:DEU40 is a reference feed for it.
