Broker symbol guide

XAUUSD, GOLD, XAUUSDm
what your gold symbol really is.

XAUUSD, GOLD, SPOTGOLD and XAU_USD are all spot gold quoted in US dollars. XAU is the currency code for one troy ounce of gold. Letters after it are account tags (m, c, x), while XAUUSD-F, GOLD.f and GC25 are futures-priced and sit at a different level from spot.

Every spelling, grouped

Measured on broker pages, TradingView broker feeds and live MetaTrader servers. MetaTrader matches symbol names exactly, including case, so XAUUSD and XAUUSDm are two different symbols on the platform even though they are the same market.

What the underlying market is

XAU is the ISO currency code for one troy ounce of gold, so XAUUSD reads "gold priced in US dollars", the same way EURUSD reads "euros priced in dollars". Spot gold is what nearly every broker's plain XAUUSD or GOLD tracks. The exchange-traded future is COMEX gold, root GC.

Cash or futures?

Gold futures trade above spot by the cost of carry, so a futures chart such as COMEX:GC1! will not match your broker's XAUUSD. Futures-priced CFDs such as Pepperstone's XAUUSD-F or BlackBull's GOLD.f follow the future instead of spot. If your gold fills look off against a chart, check which of the two you are comparing.

How the RB Trading Pro Journal handles it

The RB Trading Pro Journal reads XAUUSD, GOLD, SPOTGOLD, XAUUSDm and the other spellings here as spot gold. Free data feeds only carry the gold future, so the Journal prices spot from the live futures price adjusted by the spot gap, which it measures against a spot gold quote about every 30 minutes. Your open XAUUSD trade therefore moves with the market every few seconds and sits at the spot level your broker quotes, not the futures level.

Trades arrive by hand, by file import, or live from MT4 and MT5 and cTrader, in whatever spelling your broker uses. You never rename a symbol to get a live price or a correct R.

How this page was built: spellings come from brokers' and prop firms' own help pages and notices, from the broker feeds on TradingView, and from a public dataset of 13,740 symbol names read from 241 live MetaTrader 4 and 5 servers (metatraderVPS/metatrader-broker-symbols, CC BY 4.0). A broker is named only where one of those sources shows it. Brokers rename symbols from time to time, so check your own platform's symbol list if a name here does not match.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is XAUUSD the same as GOLD?

Yes. XAUUSD, GOLD, SPOTGOLD and XAU_USD are all spot gold in US dollars. XM, Admirals and CMC Markets call it GOLD, IG calls it SPOTGOLD and most other brokers use XAUUSD.

What does XAUUSDm or XAUUSDc mean?

They are Exness account suffixes: m marks the Standard account and c the Standard Cent account. Exness also uses r for Raw Spread and z for Zero on some servers. The market is the same spot gold.

Is my broker's XAUUSD spot gold or futures?

A plain XAUUSD or GOLD is spot gold at nearly every broker. Futures-priced versions are labelled, such as Pepperstone XAUUSD-F, BlackBull GOLD.f or IC Markets GC25.

Why does XAUUSD differ from gold futures on TradingView?

COMEX:GC1! is the gold future, which trades above spot by the cost of carry. Your broker's XAUUSD is spot, so compare it with a spot feed such as OANDA:XAUUSD rather than with GC1!.
